Mary was last seen in Chicago, Illinois. Her missing date is May 15, 1930. At the time, Mary was living with her younger sister and her parents. Their names are Michael and Catherine Moroney. They lived in the 5200 block of Wentworth Avenue. At the time, Catherine was pregnant and the family was destitute. Michael posted an advertisement in a social services column. This was in a newspaper. He was seeking help for his family. On May 14, a woman visited their home. She identified herself as Julia Otis. She claimed that she was sent there by a social worker. And that social worker was named Mrs. Henderson. She offered to assist them.

The woman spent some time with Mary’s family. She gave them groceries. And she offered to take little Mary with her to California. Catherine, however, refused. Otis came back to the home the next day. With her she had money and gifts for the family. Among these gifts included more food. And she brought some clothing for the baby. Catherine was expecting some of these things. Otis offered to take baby Mary shopping for new clothing and food. Her parents allowed this. Otis left the home with little Mary. Then she walked with the child down the street. Neither of them has ever been seen again.

THe next day, the Moroney family received a letter from Otis. This woman claimed that she’d taken Mary to California and would take good care of her. Otis claimed that she would return little Mary in two months. Two weeks later, a woman named Alice Henderson wrote to the Moroneys. She claimed that Otis was her cousin. Alice said Otis had taken Mary because she was “love hungry.” She claimed that Otis’s own husband and baby had died the year before. Henderson didn’t write the Moroneys again.

Investigation Through the Years

Authorities had their own opinion about the letters. They have stated that the letters from both Henderson and Otis seem to be in the same handwriting. Otis is described as being about 22 years old in 1930. And she was said to be well-dressed, with protruding teeth and a “cultured” voice. She never contacted Mary’s family again. And she has never been identified. Mary McClelland, a woman from California, claimed to be Mary Moroney in the 1950s. She had been adopted within a year of Moroney’s abduction. And she bore a striking resemblance to Moroney’s siblings.

A False Lead

McClelland had a reunion with Catherine and Michael in Chicago, Illinois. It was highly publicized. An anthropologist claimed that McClelland’s teeth proved that she was a relative of the Moroneys. But McClelland didn’t have the hernia scar that Mary probably would have had as an adult. McClelland’s adoptive mother claimed that she had gotten her from her physician. He supported the story and said that he’d delivered the baby himself. He had done so on November 17, 1927. But neither of them produced any records to prove this. DNA testing proved that Mary McClelland was not Mary Moroney. She died in in 2005. Mary Moroney has five brother and two sisters.
