Janet Jenkins and Lisa Ann Miller were lesbian partners. Prior to her disappearance, Isabella lived with them. Her parents met in 1997 and moved in with each other a few weeks later. Reportedly in December 2000, the couple were united in a civil union in the state of Vermont. At the time, their home state of Virginia did not recognize civil unions. In 2014, gay/lesbian marriage was legalized. In 2001, they reportedly made the decision to become parents. Aided by sperm by an anonymous donor, Lisa conceived Isabella. Janet never legally adopted her.

Reportedly, the family moved to Fair Haven, Vermont. They did this four months after Isabella was born. Lisa received fertility treatments in the pursuit of a second child. However, she was unable to conceive. The couple reportedly were members of a Unitarian Universalist congregation. In 2003, Lisa and Janet ended their relationship on friendly terms. Lisa Miller reportedly testified that Janet Jenkins was an abusive partner. And she meant both physically and emotionally. She also alleged that Janet sexually abused Isabella. No one can deny the controversies surrounding this case. It involves lesbian/gay/transgender/bisexual/questioning (LGBTQ) issues. Isabella’s case involves sexual orientation marriage equality in contrast to religious liberty. To a lesser (it seems to me), it involves the controversies surrounding infertility treatments. The issues surrounding Isabella’s case are thorny moral issues. But neither Lisa or Janet are together, and Isabella cannot be with both of them because of the circumstances. For the purpose of solving Isabella’s disappearance, she needs to returned to her home country. She is a United States citizen. Parental abduction is a crime. Someone (s) knows where Isabella is now.

Depending on our worldviews, we may differ on which woman Isabella should end up with. But she needs to be found. She is considered missing.
