Misty’s Claims

The attorney for Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh’s biological mother, stopped representing her. The attorney for Ronald Cummings, Haleigh’s biological father, also stopped representing him. Authorities continued investigating Haleigh’s disappearance. Police questioned Sheffield’s fiance as well as other family members. And they questioned friends of the family and neighbors. Repeatedly, they questioned Misty about Haleigh’s disappearance. Police looked into the possibility that she wasn’t, in fact, at home when when the child disappeared. Misty describes herself as a devoted caregiver to Haleigh and her brother. She had home the entire night and didn’t leave the children alone.

Misty’s Story

Publicly, investigators didn’t trust Misty’s story. According to them, she failed four polygraphs and one voice stress test. And she changed her story multiple times. “Consistently inconsistent” is their description of her accounts. Misty’s older brother is Hank Thomas “Tommy” Croslin, Jr. Later, both Misty and Tommy accused Joseph “Joe” Overstreet of kidnapping Haleigh. Overstreet is from Florida. Tommy, who is from Tennessee, was in Florida when Haleigh disappeared. He had visited the Cummings home on February 9. And he left only a few hours before Haleigh vanished. The next day he returned to Tennessee.

More Claims

According to Misty, Overstreet had sexually abused her when she was still a child. He had been involved in criminal activity his whole life. But he wasn’t registered as a sex offender. Tommy accused him first. He claimed that Overstreet had planned to steal a machine gun from the Cummings’ residence. Tommy claimed that when Joe couldn’t find it, he threatened Misty with a knife and took Haleigh. Tommy and Joe drove to the St. John’s river, which was five miles from Haleigh’s home. Overstreet threw Haleigh in the river. Later, Misty affirmed his statement. She lied earlier because of her cousin.

Denials

Overstreet denies any involvement in Haleigh’s disappearance. And he hasn’t been charged in connection with it. He hasn’t even been named as a suspect. But he has been interviewed. In April 2010, authorities searched the river. And they brought Misty to the dock. But this search yielded nothing of interest. In January 2010, Misty, Tommy, and Ronald were arrested on unrelated drug dealing charges. Hope Antwanette Sykes, Ronald’s cousin, and a friend, Donna Michelle Brock, were also arrested and charged. Sykes, Tommy, Ronald, and brock all pleaded guilty. Misty pleaded no contest. All these defendants but Misty, got 15 years in prison. Misty got 25 years.
